Is there a reason you didn’t use ‘noyau’ for newel? I only ask because I remember the menuisier used ‘noyau’ when talking about our staircase.
I could also have said “noyau” in this case. The “fût” is always solid as opposed to the “noyau” which can also be “évidé or hollow. When it is solid, then “fût” is the correct technical term rather than “noyau”.
