We were taking a walk in Les Grouets when we sighted this boar head on a garage. The sign beneath says “Le Petit Vautrait”. A “vautrait” is a pack of hounds for wild boar hunting. We’re just next door to Sologne, the former hunting ground of François I.
I wonder how the idea of mounting an animal’s head on your garage (or whatever) got started… and continues to be practiced.
You’ve seen others? This was the first time – though I’ve seen plenty inside.
Not outside. I would guess they would not hold up well under the elements… on the other hand I guess they did while the animal was alive !
