Postcard #17 – Armenian Houses in Zamosc

There are five very colourful 17th century Armenian houses on the market square in Zamosc, whose style combines Italian and oriental influences. The blue house is decorated with a young married couple while the yellow shows a polychrome Virgin of Mary slaying Evil in the form of a dragon. The red house depicts the Archangel Gabriel and a dragon symbolising Evil surrounded by two more reassuring lions. The green house in the last photo has a bas-relief showing the baptism of Christ while the yellow house next to it has very little decoration because it was owned by a simple academy professor.
Il y a cinq maisons du 17e siècle très colorées sur la place du marché à Zamosc, qui ont un cachet aussi bien italien qu’oriental. La maison bleue est décorée d’un couple de jeunes mariés, la jaune représente une vierge polychrome très orientale terrassant le mal qui a pris la forme d’un dragon. La maison rouge s’orne de l’ange Gabriel et d’un dragon symbolisant le Mal, contrecarrés par deux lions rassurants. La maison verte dans la dernière photo est ornée d’un bas-relief représentant le baptême du Christ tandis que la maison jaune à côté possède une façade moins riche car elle appartenait à un simple professeur d’académie.
