When Monique et Jacky sold us their beautiful house, Closerie Falaiseau, they left us lots of interesting objects. One was a large pair of wooden tongs more than a metre long but they weren’t quite sure what they were used for. Imagine how thrilled I was when we visited a leather museum in Château Renault today and discovered that it’s a leather stitching clamp. Used to hold two pieces of leather together while they are being stitched, it is held between the legs, with one leg on top (the weight of the thigh is sufficient to hold it in place, even when pulling hard on the thread).

There is a similar, but I seem to remember, not identical item in the museum in Preuilly. I think it was used for shaping steamed timber, but I might be remembering incorrectly.
Was it made of wood, do you think?
That’s a term I was not familiar with.
So glad you were able to work it out
