Hôtel Lallement Bourges

The Hôtel Lallemant in Bourges is an early example of the first French Renaissance built before the castles of the Loire Valley: the François I wing of Blois Castle and the châteaux of Azay le Rideau, Chambord and Chenonceau. It is remarkable for the quality of its sculpted decoration and the personality of its sponsors: the Lallemant brothers. The construction of this private mansion probably began in 1497 and was completed in the early 16th century. The finely sculpted facades, decorated in the Greco-Roman style, are of very high quality, suggesting the contribution of Italian ornamentalists. The medallions on the wall to the right of the door are particularly interesting.

L’hôtel Lallemant est un exemple précoce d’édifice de la première Renaissance française. Il est remarquable par la qualité de son décor sculpté et par la personnalité des commanditaires : les frères Lallemant. Cet hôtel particulier dont la construction commence vraisemblablement en 1497 est terminé dans les premières années du XVIème siècle. Les façades de ce bâtiment sont ornées d’un décor antiquisant d’une grande qualité et d’une extrême finesse, laissant supposer l’intervention d’un atelier d’ornemanistes italiens. Les médaillons sur le mur à droite de la porte d’entrée sont particulièrement intéressants.
