We saw this strange architectural mix today in Chailles, the village across the Loire from where we live. Wonder what the half-timbered addition contains?

Hanging over the front door, I think it safe to say that it was not a forerunner of indoor plumbing.
Could it possibly have been a pigeonnier ?

Yes, we’ve visited a lot in the South of France in particular, but they are usually stand-alone: http://www.aussieinfrance.com/2012/09/pigeon-houses-in-france/. I doubt if they would have one over what appears to be the front door. Have you see the one at Château Villesavin (good bike itinerary).
