Postcard from the Lot River

Today we cycled along the Lot in the same direction as yesterday but starting from Puy l’Évêque. Our destination was Albas. On the way we rode up a hill to Bélaye hoping to combine the stunning view with coffee but like many cafés, opening day in June 9th. Fortunately we took a picnic lunch today …

Postcard from Puy-l’Evêque

We have moved to our next location, Puy-l’Évêque, on the Lot River this time, so plenty of scope for cycling. The weather has improved considerably since yesterday although it was still quite cloudy and a little chilly this morning as you can see from the second photo. Nous sommes à notre deuxième lieu de séjour, …

Postcard from Issigeac

Today we left Lalinde for Puy-l’Évêque and stopped on the way to buy some Bergerac wine at Les Hauts de Caillevel. Next we visited the delightful little mediaeval village of Issigeac with its many half-timbered houses. This one is known as the mushroom house due to its shape. We then had lunch at the only …

Postcard from Eyrignac Manor Gardens

We saved the sunniest day to visit these family-owned gardens for 22 generations with their topiary inspired by 18th century designs. The only variation on green is white. The general impression is one of great calm, incredible vistas and lushness. We also had them mostly to ourselves. Nous avons gardé le jour le plus ensoleillé …

Postcard from Cadouin

Who doesn’t love cloisters? And these 15th century Gothic flamboyant cloisters are particularly fine and unusually decorated for a Cistercian Abbey. It is not surprising that Cadouin Abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site. My favourite sculpture on one of the keystones is Delila cutting Samson’s hair. I also love the all-white and green garden. …

Postcard – La Dordogne

Yesterday took us up to the Cingles des Trémolat and Limeuil, which are like the S-bend in Austria but not quite as exciting. A tough but doable climb with our e-bikes. However at Limeul after an excellent lunch surrounded by flowers we visited the beautiful gardens of Limeuil where I took this photo of the …

CDP Theme Day – When I can travel again

This month’s City Daily Photo theme day is When I can travel again. Today is the real beginning of our first holiday since September 2020 and we chose Lalinde near Bergerac in Dordogne in France. We were not disappointed. We cycled 50 km on a perfect sunny day along a peaceful canal, then the Dordogne …

Postcard from Lalinde

What a wonderful spot to start our first holiday since September. The house we are renting is wonderful too! Lalinde is a small town on the Dordogne River 100 k east of Bordeaux and about 20 k from Bergerac. And we are right on the cycle path. Quel merveilleux endroit pour démarrer nos premières vacances …

The Bower Bird – L’oiseau jardinier

You may remember a blue garden exhibit at Château de Chaumont inspired by the bower bird’s nest that I posted a few days ago. Chad Addison, an amateur photographer living in Canberra just happens to have a bower bird in his garden. Since retiring he has conducted various workshops as part of a U3A photography …
