Today we met up with our good friends Anne and Bruno from Paris. We discovered a few days ago that we would be in Sicily at the same time. We watched the sun set over the salt flats with a glass of Marsala. The car is still unscratched.
Aujourd’hui nous avons retrouvé nos amis Anne et Bruno. Nous avons appris il y a quelques jours qu’ils seraient en Sicile en meme temps que nous. Nous avons regardé le soleil se coucher sur les salines avec un verre de marsala. La voiture n’a pas encore de rayure.

First images of Sicily – the Kasbah in Mazaro del Valle (we are leaving Palermo for the end of our trip). We have rented a brand new Twingo rosso and considering the extraordinarily narrow streets our French sav nat is sending us down we are wondering how much red will have been rubbed off in the next week.
Premières images de Sicile : la Kasbah de Mazaro (nous gardons Palermo pour la fin de notre voyage). Nous avons loué une Twingo rosso et nous nous inquiétons de savoir combien de rouge il y aura encore après une semaine si notre GPS continue à nous envoyer dans des rues aussi étroites !
We are spending the last few days of our holiday on Lake Orta quite close of where we began nearly a month ago at Lake Iseo. This is the little island in the middle of the lake.
Nous passons les derniers jours de nos vacance sur le lac Orta tout près de l’endroit où nous avons commencé il y a presque un mois, au lac Iseo. Voici la petite île au centre du lac.
Today we went in the other direction on the cycle route between Iseo Lake and Brescia to visit the delightful little town of Brescia with its broad spectrum of architecture. Here, you can see the 15th century side of Piazza de la Loggia. The second photo was taken in a pasticceria en route at Paderno Franciacorta. Jean Michel is reading the local newspaper in Italian, under the Empire State Building, drinking cappuccino and eating a pain aux raisin. Tomorrow we’re changing countries.
Nous sommes partis dans le sens opposé aujourd’hui sur l’itinéraire vélo entre le lac Iseo et Brescia pour visiter cette jolie ville à l’architecture bien hétéroclite : ici on voit la partie XVe de la Piazza de la Loggia. La deuxième photo est prise dans une pâtisserie en route à Paderno Franciacorta : Jean Michel lit le journal local en Italien, sous l’Empire State Building, en dégustant un cappuccino et un pain aux raisins. Demain nous changeons de pays.
Clusane del Lago is on Lake Iseo, the smallest of the northern Italian lakes. We saw the restaurant as we were riding towards our destination of Paratica 5 k further along the lake and booked a table for the way back. The view was stunning! Jean Michel ordered fried lake fish while I had a delicious scalloppina al limone followed by tiramisu. We had a carafe of local frizzante. The return trip was 25 K and we just made it before dark.
Clusane del Lago se trouve sur le lac Iseo, le plus petit des lacs italiens du nord. Séduit par ce restaurant en nous rendant en vélo à notre destination de Paratica à cinq kilomètres plus loin sur le bord du lac nous avons réservé une table pour le retour. La vue était imprenable ! Jean Michel a choisi des poissons frits du lac alors que j’ai dégusté une excellente scalloppina al limone suivi d’un tisamisu. Il nous restait encore 25 kilomètres pour retourner à notre location. Nous sommes arrivés juste avant la tombée de la nuit !
This cemetary is in the tiny village of Gudon not far from the Austrian border where we stopped for a picnic lunch.
Ce cimetière est dans le petit village de Gudon pas loin de la frontière autrichienne où nous avons fait un picnic à midi.

Santa Maria della Croce is a basilica on the outskirts of Crema in Lombardy built in the Lombard Renaissance style where an apparition of the Virgin Mary is said to have helped Caterina degli Uberti, a woman from Crema fatally wounded by her husband on 3 April 1490 (he cut off her hand and part of her arm and then punched her in the back). Wishing to die in the Grace of God, she implored the help of the Virgin Mary who is said to have taken her to a nearby farmhouse. She was then moved inside the city walls where she died, after receiving the last rites and pardoning her husband. A simple wooden cross was placed in the woods where the murder took place but a series of miracles turned the site into a holy place and a sanctuary was built there. The photo below showing the appearance of the Virgin Mary was taken inside the church.
Santa Maria della Croce est un basilique à l’extérieur de la ville de Crema en Lombardie construit dans le style de la Renaissance lombarde sur le site d’une apparition de la Vierge Marie qui aurait aidé Caterina degli Uberti, une femme de Crema dont le mari lui donne des coups d’épée et l’ampute de la main droite et d’une partie du bras avant de la frapper dans le dos. Voulant les derniers sacrements, elle a demandé l’aide de la Vierge Marie qui l’aurait emmené dans une ferme à côté. Elle est ensuite transporté à l’intérieur des murs de la ville où elle décède après avoir pardonné son mari. Une petite croix en bois est placé dans le bois où le meurtre a lieu mais une série de miracles transforme le site en lieu saint et on construit un sanctuaire. La photo en dessous qui montre l’apparition de la Vierge Marie est prise à l’intérieur de l’église.

Cervo was a well-earned rest at the top of a hill cycling along the Ligurian Coast east of Imperia. It was full of little streets like this one.
On a bien mérité le repos à Cervo qui se trouvait en haut d’une colline sur la côté ligurienne à l’est de la ville d’Imperia. Il y avait plein de petites ruelles comme celle-ci.
Practically every inch of an Italian beach is taken up with deck chairs and beach umbrellas that are rented out to users at various price according to the location. From time to time, you do find a public beach but it’s always small. In the photo below, you can see a public beach in the foreground and a private beach fenced off behind.
Presque chaque centimètre carré d’une plage italiennesest couvert de transats et de parasols qui sont loués aux usagers à des prix différents selon le lieu. De temps en temps, on trouve quand même une plage publique mais elle est toujours petite. Dans la photo ci-dessous on voit une plage publique en premier plan et une plage privée derrière une clôture à côté.
It took 45 excruciating minutes of narrow roads and hairpin bends to get up to this B&B in Liguria in Italy yesterday. By the time we got there, the top of the mountain was covered in mist and we couldn’t see a thing. But this morning, the sun came out and it was worth it!
Il a fallu 45 minutes insoutenables de routes étroites et de virages en épingle à cheveux pour grimper en voiture à cette chambre d’hôte en Ligurie en Italie hier. Lorsqu’on est arrivé enfin le sommet de la montagne fut entouré de brume et on ne voyait rien. Mais ce matin, le soleil est sorti et cela valait bien la peine !
