On our way to Münster by car today, we stopped off for lunch at Aachen, better known as Aix la Chapelle. For those who have read Browning’s poem, “How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix”, it is a well-known name. Charlemagne decided to set up a permanent court there in 800 and started building the cathedral. The gothic chancel was consecrated in 1414. The very beautiful mosaics inside the original octogonal basilic are Byzantine. From Münsterplatz, from the steps at the back of the Rathaus (town hall), the view is stunning. Today there was a massive flea market.
En route pour Münster en voiture aujourd’hui, nous avons fait un pause-déjeuner à Aix-la-Chapelle ou Aachen en allemand. Charlemagne l’a choisi pour y installer de façon permanente la cour franque et fut couronné empereur romain en l’an 800. Il a entrepris la construction de la cathédral peu avant 800. Le choeur gothique fut consacré en 1414. Les superbes mosaïques à l’intérieur de la basilique octogonale d’origine sont byzantines. Depuis les escaliers à l’arrière de l’hôtel de ville qui se trouvent à Münsterplatz, on a une vue imprenable. Aujourd’hui il y avait un marché aux puces gigantesque.
